Maresca stunned as Chelsea risk losing 'very important' player
Atletico Madrid have reportedly expressed their interest in signing Chelsea defender Marc Cucurella next summer.
The Spain international has established himself as one of Enzo Maresca’s most crucial players over the past 12 months and his form at Stamford Bridge is reportedly being monitored by Atletico.
Diego Simeone is eager to bolster his defensive roster in 2026 and he has identified Cucurella as a key target, according to Spanish publication Fichajes.
The 27-year-old’s current contract at Chelsea is due to expire in 2028, but he is expected to sign a new deal with the Blues and Fabrizio Romano has already confirmed that a full agreement has been reached between all parties.
However, Atletico Madrid have now registered their interest in acquiring his signature and they are prepared to submit an offer worth €40 million, as per Fichajes.
This is in line with Cucurella’s current Estimated Transfer Value (ETV) of €44.8m, but given Chelsea paid in excess of €65m to sign him from Brighton & Hove Albion in 2022, they are extremely unlikely to sanction a sale for that price.
Maresca described Cucurella as a “very important” player just months after his appointment at Stamford Bridge and the Spaniard has started 12 of Chelsea’s 13 matches across the Premier League and Champions League so far this campaign.
As a result, Atletico are likely to find it incredibly difficult to finalise a deal to bring Cucurella to the Wanda Metropolitano.
Marc Cucurella likely to stay at Chelsea
Although Chelsea will be extremely reluctant to sell Cucurella next year, there are several players who are likely to depart on a permanent deal in 2026.
Axel Disasi and Raheem Sterling have both been cast aside since returning from respective loan spells at Aston Villa and Arsenal this summer, and Chelsea are desperate to offload the duo as soon as possible.
Meanwhile, Nicolas Jackson and David Datro Fofana are also likely to be sold on permanent deals when their loan stints away from the club end.
