Ex-MLS star Hwang In-beom reveals dream to emulate Man Utd great
Feyenoord midfielder Hwang In-beom looked close to a move to Fulham this summer, but the transfer ultimately fell through.
The South Korean, however, harbours no regrets and emphasises the pride the interest brought him. The 29-year-old Hwang joined Feyenoord last year after his stint at Red Star Belgrade.
At De Kuip, he quickly became a mainstay and a crowd favourite. Several clubs showed interest this summer, including Fulham, but Feyenoord decided not to let him leave.
Despite the missed opportunity, Hwang looks back without frustration. "I was especially proud," he tells Voetbal International. "I was in rehab when I heard about it.
"You have to understand that the Premier League is special for guys from South Korea. When I was young, I watched Ji-Sung Park at Manchester United.
"Everyone wanted to play in the Premier League because it was essentially the only foreign league we knew well. So when clubs from that league inquired about me, yes, that made me proud."
Hwang 'happy at Feyenoord'
For the former Vancouver Whitecaps midfielder, the interest also felt like confirmation of his development. "I talked about it with my family. I played better at my previous clubs than at Feyenoord because I was injury-free there.
"But no Premier League club ever approached me. Now, after a year at Feyenoord and not even at my best, those clubs did approach me. That says something about how big Feyenoord is and how happy I am to be playing here."
Feyenoord kept the door closed on a departure, so Hwang is now fully focused on his current club. "I wasn't disappointed that a transfer to England didn't go through.
"At Feyenoord, my main goal now is to stay fit, become champions, and perform well in Europe. I'm going to do everything I can to achieve that. You never know what the future holds," he concludes.
