Ex-Arsenal star Theo Walcott has criticised his former club for failing to finalise a deal for Manchester United summer signing Bryan Mbeumo.

The Cameroon international was heavily linked with a move to the Emirates Stadium throughout his time at Brentford, however Mikel Arteta’s side ultimately decided against agreeing a transfer for the winger this summer.

Instead, the Gunners picked up Noni Madueke from Chelsea in July, in a bid to provide healthy competition for Bukayo Saka, and Mbeumo eventually completed a €75 million move to Man Utd.

Tottenham Hotspur were also interested in acquiring the 26-year-old’s signature this summer, with Thomas Frank eager to be reunited with his former Brentford pupil following his appointment in north London, however a deal never materialised.

Since his arrival at Old Trafford, Mbeumo has established himself as an integral member of Ruben Amorim’s first-team squad and he has already notched five goals and one assist in 10 appearances across all competitions so far this season.

He notably netted a brace versus Brighton & Hove Albion on Saturday evening, with Man Utd now up to sixth place in the Premier League table, with 16 points from their opening nine matches.

Theo Walcott admits Bryan Mbeumo regret

Speaking on The Overlap US, Walcott admitted that Arsenal missed a trick by allowing Mbeumo to complete a move to Man Utd this summer.

“You have [Matheus] Cunha coming back and defending as well, and Mbeumo, who I think is outstanding,” Walcott said.

“You look at players away from the Premier League who come into the Premier League, they take time. These guys [like Mbeumo] were built for Premier League football.

“I think Mbeumo has been incredible and he’s a player Arsenal should have bought many years ago.”

However, despite Mbeumo’s fantastic start to life as a Man Utd player, Arsenal are showing little signs of missing him as they are currently four points clear at the top of the Premier League table, having won seven of their nine English top flight matches this term.
