Man Utd 'fear' Ruben Amorim will resign before he gets sacked
Ruben Amorim is on the brink at Manchester United, with Saturday’s 3-1 Premier League loss against Brentford leaving the Red Devils marooned in the lower half of the table.
Despite the wretched record that the Portuguese has had since moving to Man Utd nearly a year ago, Red Devils owner Sir Jim Ratcliffe is said to be “desperate” that the head coach becomes a success at Old Trafford. To this end, United are still willing to be patient with the 40-year-old.
Indeed, the iPaper reports that Man Utd “fear” that Amorim will resign before he is sacked.
The former Sporting CP boss is said to have been surprised by the scrutiny that has fallen upon him since taking the role last November. Despite posting the sixth-worst record in Premier League history after 33 games with any club, he feels that there is an unfair knee-jerk reaction to each loss.
Amorim is said to be considering how best to protect his own long-term reputation, and that could mean walking away before the situation gets any worse.
The situation that he faces is very different to Erik ten Hag’s a year ago. United had started contacting candidates over replacing the Dutchman, and while there have been rumours that the likes of Gareth Southgate could take command at Old Trafford, it is claimed that the Manchester side have not started taking these concrete steps with regards their new boss.
What happens if Amorim quits?
It appears that United do not have a long-term strategy in place should Amorim leave.
The iPaper suggests that they are looking at the possibility of having a long-term interim manager in place until the end of the season, giving them plenty of time to assess their options.
Michael Carrick, who is currently out of work after leaving Middlesbrough, is a name touted for that position and would be 'tempted' by the role.
Man Utd, though, are not considering this possibility at the moment, with Amorim set to be given every opportunity to succeed.
