'This has to end as quickly as possible' - Carragher issues brutal Amorim sack verdict
Liverpool legend Jamie Carragher has urged Manchester United to sack Ruben Amorim “as quickly as possible” following their 3-1 defeat to Brentford on Saturday.
The Red Devils boss has been heavily tipped to become the next Premier League manager to be sacked after a dismal spell at Old Trafford, and Carragher believes it’s time for the 20-time English top flight champions to make a managerial change.
Amorim has only won 19 of his 49 matches in charge of Man Utd, while he has incredibly never won back-to-back Premier League games for the club.
Gareth Southgate, Oliver Glasner and Xavi have all been linked with the Old Trafford job, and Carragher has urged the Red Devils to finally cut ties with Amorim.
“I think he’s still in a job because the powers-at-be have made so many mistakes that they almost don’t want to admit right now they have made another,” Carregher admitted to Sky Sports on Monday Night Football.
“This has been a disaster for Amorim and United. The quicker they make a decision on the manager we are only waiting for the inevitable. This has to end as quickly as possible.
He added: “I think every other Premier League manager would think ‘I could do a better job.’ The only positive is they haven’t gone all out for his system.
“Any competent football manager could get United to the European places or certainly fighting for them. It couldn’t have gone any worse.
“What he did at Sporting was really special, but it will be better for everyone to just shake hands and move on,” Carragher concluded.
Next Man Utd manager odds
The aforementioned Glasner is currently the bookies’ favourite to become the next Man Utd manager, and reports speculate that he would be willing to leave Crystal Palace mid-season in order to join the Old Trafford outfit.
Transfer news expert Fabrizio Romano has confirmed that Barcelona legend Xavi is eager to join the Red Devils if Amorim is sacked, while Southgate retains a close relationship with Man Utd owners INEOS and this is why he is among the top contenders for the job.
Unai Emery, Andoni Iraola and Eddie Howe are also potential candidates to replace Amorim, as per the bookies, although it appears as though Man Utd are unlikely to sack their current boss until November in order to reduce their possible compensation outlay.
