Ruben Amorim and the next FOUR managers to be sacked at big clubs
The season is only a month old, but managers at big clubs all over Europe are already losing their jobs, and several more will follow in the weeks ahead.
Erik ten Hag, Jose Mourinho and Nuno Espirito Santo might be among the most respected coaches in world football, yet all three have lost their positions in the early weeks of the season.
It took Ten Hag just a couple of Bundesliga matches to be jettisoned by Bayer Leverkusen, Mourinho was ditched at Fenerbahce because of his negative football, while Nuno’s relationship breakdown with Nottingham Forest owner Evangelos Marinakis explains his quick exit.
Here are the next five big jobs that will become available in the coming weeks.
Russell Martin – Rangers
Martin’s position is growing increasingly untenable at Rangers. Incredibly, the Glasgow giants have failed to win any of their first five league matches of the season and were defeated 2-0 at home by Hearts last weekend.
Already out of the Champions League after being mauled by Club Brugge, the former Southampton manager has won just three of his 12 competitive matches since moving to Ibrox.
It’s not good enough, and the fans are busy telling the new owners just that.
Ruben Amorim – Man Utd
The lacklustre manner with which Manchester City celebrated Sunday’s derby victory over Amorim’s United told you everything you needed to know about the gulf between the clubs at present. It was like they had just overcome Burnley.
“I think if the manager is honest with himself, it has got worse,” Wayne Rooney told BBC’s ‘Match of the Day’.
“It is very difficult to sit here and say we are seeing progression, and at least we're seeing things that will get results in the near future.”
Gary Neville said on commentary with Sky Sports: “There have been times when I have seen United lose this type of match when I feel angry and frustrated. I just feel nothing, which is even worse.
“This has been a nothing of a performance. United have just been beaten. With Chelsea next week, another defeat and big questions would start to be asked.”
United can’t go on like this much longer.
Graham Potter – West Ham United
When West Ham allowed David Moyes to leave in the summer of 2024, they could scarcely have imagined that their project to install a more attractive brand of football would go so badly.
Julen Lopetegui was sacked midway through last term and Potter cannot last too much longer after a nightmare start to this campaign.
The Hammers are in the Premier League relegation zone with just three points from their opening four matches – and they have conceded an alarming 11 goals.
Brushed aside by Sunderland, Chelsea and then Tottenham at the weekend, bad results against Crystal Palace, Everton and Arsenal will see the end of Potter.
Gerardo Seoane – Borussia Monchengladbach
Humiliated 4-0 at home by relegation candidates Werder Bremen at the weekend, the clock is ticking for Gerardo Seoane, who was lucky to avoid the sack last season.
Gladbach are the only Bundesliga team not to have scored a goal during the opening three matches of the season and following their latest setback were jeered off the park by their home supporters.
While captain Rocco Reitz strutted about looking angry throughout, Robin Hack commented after the game that Gladbach “played like s**t”.
Sporting director Roland Virkus admitted after the game: “There’s no positive trend here.”
Applicants for the Gladbach job will be polishing off their CVs as Seoane faces an anxious wait.
