Liverpool’s $170 million Isak mocked with ‘Swedish Rat Burger’ after Newcastle exit fury
Liverpool centre-forward Alexander Isak has had a burger named in his honour – but it’s a dubious one for the former Newcastle United hitman.
Isak left fans in the North East livid at his conduct over the summer, with the Sweden international going on strike after announcing that he wanted to leave the Magpies.
He ultimately forced his way to Liverpool in a British record deal worth $170 million.
The transfer left a bad taste in the mouth of Newcastle fans, and as a form of protest, Scott & Wilson, a North Shields bar, has launched ‘the Swedish Rat’ burger, which has quickly become one of their best sellers.
The Northern Echo reports that the burger contains Swedish gravy and cranberry sauce in the style of Ikea meatballs.
Introducing the meal on their socials, Scott & Wilson say: "This won't be around forever... a bit like our favourite turnip. However, it's guaranteed not to leave a salty taste in your mouth."
’Swedish Rat Burger our way of saying good riddance’
Owner Calvin Khass explained: “The Swedes aren't known for their cuisine, so I thought we could do it with something Sweden is known for here, Ikea.”
Khass has criticised Isak for the manner in which he conducted himself during the transfer saga, echoing the thoughts of many Newcastle supporters.
“If he wanted to go, fair enough,” he said. “But it was bundled on both sides, it just didn't seem very sporting.
“He downed tools all summer, played the victim, then jumped ship at the first chance.
“We wanted to mark his exit in a way he would understand - by making a meal of it.
“The Swedish Rat Burger is our special way of saying 'good riddance'.”
Isak has yet to debut for Liverpool since making the switch from Newcastle but has admitted it could take him time to get up and running after a summer in which his preparations have been heavily compromised by his transfer.
A return to Newcastle will have to wait until next season, unless the Reds draw the Magpies in one of the cups, with the clubs having already met at St James’ Park in the Premier League. It promises to be a must-watch affair.
