The closing days of the transfer window promise to be huge for Manchester United.

Ruben Amorim’s side have already added three top forwards to their ranks for the Premier League season, but there is still much work to be done before the Red Devils look like a side fighting for the top four again.

But all hope is not lost. With 11 days left of the window, there is still the prospect of director of football Jason Wilcox working some magic behind the scenes to make Man Utd a competitive force again.

Amorim needs two signings

There are two principal areas that Manchester United need to recruit in:

  • Goalkeeper

  • Central midfield

It’s going to be a tall order getting these deals done, but it’s certainly not impossible.

If the will is there, Gianluigi Donnarumma has been made available for transfer by PSG and would instantly prove an upgrade in goal. He might not have the sweeper-keeper profile that Amorim would ideally like, but his shot-stopping capabilities make up for that.

Manchester City want him, but the Italian going to the Etihad might cause as many problems as it solves.

What about central midfield? Carlos Baleba of Brighton has clearly been made Man Utd’s main target in this area. He wants to move to Old Trafford and in an absolutely perfect world, he would arrive in a blockbuster deal.

Amorim loves the intensity the 20-year-old Cameroon international brings to his teams and Baleba appears a player ideally suited to the Red Devils.

Brighton have told United he’s not for sale at any price this summer, so while he may be Amorim’s perfect signing, it’s questionable how realistic this deal is. With the Seagulls looking for Baleba's replacement, all hope is certainly not dead.

Lucien Agoume of Sevilla is the alternative for the moment. He might not be exactly who Amorim wants, but he could be who he gets. It’s not a bad compromise.

A backup centre-forward would top off the window perfectly. Benjamin Sesko is lacking real competition in that area as Rasmus Hojlund grows increasingly unsettled and Joshua Zirkzee operates better in a slightly deeper role.

Amorim may want another No.9, but he needs a goalkeeper and a midfielder.

Who does Amorim want out?

Key to what United can do in the transfer market will be who they can sell.

Amorim needs four players off his squad particularly quickly and, ideally, for good fees. None of these names come as a surprise; all have been included in Man Utd’s ‘Bomb Squad’:

  • Jadon Sancho
  • Antony
  • Alejandro Garnacho
  • Tyrell Malacia

You could also argue that Hojlund needs to be included on this list, but that is only if a replacement can be found in time.

Of the four members of Amorim’s bomb squad, Sancho appears closest to leaving the club. Serie A side Roma have made a €17m bid that United are willing to accept, though Italian media reports that the player’s entourage are demanding huge commission putting the deal in doubt. In a perfect world, Roma get this over the line.

Garnacho, meanwhile, is close to Chelsea, according to Fabrizio Romano. United want around €50m for him. This would be valuable income to put towards new signings.

Left-back Malacia has been linked with Roma and Besiktas, and United would likely accept a small fee for the Dutchman to depart.

The case of Antony looks trickier. Real Betis want to take him back to Spain, but the player is very expensive and, in any case, it would not be the €40m permanent transfer that Amorim would ideally wish for. But don’t rule anything out; with two weekends of league action before Deadline Day, a late injury could completely change a team’s plans.
