Lyon are attempting to cancel the transfer of USMNT goalkeeper Matt Turner from Nottingham Forest—despite the deal being in place for nearly two months.

Former Arsenal shot-stopper Turner was set to finalize his move to the Ligue 1 club in an €8 million ($8.7M) deal agreed in early June, but OL are now reportedly trying to annul the agreement and send the American back to the Premier League, L’Equipe reports.

OL have recently decided that the 31-year-old is too expensive to keep as a backup goalkeeper in a squad facing severe financial constraints this season.

The transfer was nearly finalized but never made fully official before Lyon were unexpectedly relegated to France’s second division. While the club ultimately won their appeal and were reinstated to Ligue 1, they’re still facing major financial hurdles this season.

As L’Equipe reports: “If Lyon's management were to keep owner John Textor's commitments to Nottingham owner Evangelos Marinakis for Turner, in the current context of transfer and wage bill controls by the DNCG [French football’s financial watchdog], this transfer would derail the club’s plans for ‘smart’ and low-cost recruitment to strengthen the squad, and the team’s competitiveness for the upcoming season would be significantly impacted.”

Specialist lawyers have reportedly been hired by Lyon to cancel the deal, ideally through a mutual agreement.

Could Forest Help Lyon Again?

Lyon’s relationship with Nottingham Forest has sparked controversy in recent months.

Forest came out as the big winners when OL were ultimately admitted into this season’s Europa League. Due to Textor’s prior co-ownership of Crystal Palace, the Eagles were disqualified from that competition and controversially relegated to the Conference League instead.

Meanwhile, Evangelos Marinakis’ side helped bail out Lyon financially by signing Danilo from another Textor-owned club, Botafogo. That transaction allowed the American businessman to redirect the funds to Lyon, improving their cash flow and strengthening their appeal against administrative relegation.

All this followed Textor’s sale of his Crystal Palace shares on June 23.

Now, it seems Lyon are seeking another favor from Forest—by canceling the Turner transfer. The USMNT goalkeeper actually spent the second half of last season on loan at Palace, making four appearances.
