Man Utd offered three Juventus stars in Sancho swap deal: Serie A expert gives his verdict
Manchester United have been offered three Juventus players in a potential swap deal for Jadon Sancho, but would they improve Ruben Amorim’s squad? FootballTransfers asked an Italian football expert to find out.
United and Juve continue to seek a solution that will see Sancho move to the Serie A club in time for the new season.
The finances of the deal are making it difficult for the Italian side to get the signing over the line, particularly given the large wages that Sancho is on at Man Utd. While it appears that the England winger is ready to take a salary cut to move to Turin, Juve are now looking at options that could keep the transfer fee down.
One route that the Bianconeri are prepared to go down is by offering Man Utd a swap deal, according to GMS.
Douglas Luiz, Dusan Vlahovic and Timo Weah are all thought to be viable options when it comes to making a trade, but would they be effective at Manchester United?
FootballTransfers asked Serie A expert Carlo Garganese, a host of the Italian Football Podcast, for his take on the trio.
Man Utd’s Sancho swap options: Expert opinion
Douglas Luiz is, on paper, perhaps the most exciting of the trio Man Utd might sign, given his success in the past with Aston Villa. Things have not gone so smoothly in Italy, however.
“When Juventus signed him, Luiz was considered one of the best central midfielders in the Premier League but he has been a disaster in Turin. He played just 519 minutes of football, and scored no goals and delivered no assists. He also suffered five separate injuries and looked completely unfit and unmotivated,” Garganese explained.
Is Vlahovic a deal worth exploring from the perspective of the Old Trafford side, then? Ruben Amorim is known to be on the lookout for a No.9, while the Serbia international has been linked with United in the past.
Garganese is cool on the prospect, with value for money a major concern.
“Dusan Vlahovic has also been a big disappointment since arriving from Fiorentina in an €80m deal in 2022,” he says. “Although his goal record isn't bad, his overall game has not been up to the level of a top player for a top club.
“Vlahovic is the highest-paid player in Serie A on €12 million per season and Juventus are not willing to continue paying him that much given both his under par performances on the pitch and the club’s new policy of lowering the wage ceiling.
“With his contract expiring next year, Juve will sell this summer if they can find someone willing to take on his wages.”
And finally there is USMNT star Timo Weah, who completes a trio of players who have struggled at Juve.
“Timothy Weah arrived from Lille in 2023 but, while he has never lacked for effort and application, he has shown himself to not be of the level of a team as big as Juventus,” Garganese says.
“Although naturally a right winger, Weah has spent most of his time at Juve as a right wing-back or a right-back. Physically he has the pace and the work-rate and stamina, but he comes up short technically and also defensively.
“Juventus tried to force him into a transfer last week to Nottingham Forest but he rejected the move.”
Man Utd, it seems, would be best advised to hold out for the full fee on Sancho and resist any swap options.
