OFFICIAL: Chelsea complete Joao Pedro transfer
Chelsea have officially completed the signing of Brighton forward Joao Pedro.
The Blues have announced their sixth signing of the summer as Brazil international Pedro has moved to Stamford Bridge from Brighton for an initial €64.3 million, with the deal potentially rising to around €70m.
Pedro had made no secret of his desire to leave the Seagulls as he felt ready to take the next step in his career after two impressive seasons on the South Coast.
According to former teammate Igor Julio, Pedro prioritised a move to London, which gave Chelsea a crucial edge over his many other suitors, chiefly Liverpool and Newcastle.
The 23-year-old has signed a contract until 2032 with the Blues after completing his medical in the US, where he has now linked up with Enzo Maresca's squad.
Chelsea sign Pedro
Unlike Jamie Gittens, who is also expected to join Chelsea imminently, Pedro will be able to participate in the Club World Cup. Gittens has already suited up for Borussia Dortmund, so he is no longer eligible to play for Chelsea at the competition in the US.
Pedro, meanwhile, has been registered for Chelsea's squad, which FIFA inadvertently leaked before the deal was even officially announced by the club. The attacker was already added to the Blues' roster on the governing body's website earlier on Wednesday.
It will be interesting to see how Chelsea will utilise the Brazil international. Pedro is not a traditional No.9, and this is precisely why the Premier League giants signed him. They wanted a different profile to Nicolas Jackson and fellow new recruit Liam Delap.
The 23-year-old can play as a centre-forward or more withdrawn attacker and will provide Enzo Maresca with huge tactical flexibility. He scored 30 goals and provided 10 assists in 70 games for Brighton, so he is expected to chip in with a fair share of goals at Chelsea.
