Rangers have agreed terms with Russell Martin to become their new manager.

The former Scotland international is set to be the Gers' new permanent boss after Barry Ferguson steered the ship on an interim basis following the sacking of Philippe Clement in February.

According to Sky Sports, Martin has now agreed personal terms with Rangers to take the job. The 39-year-old has been out of a job since getting sacked by Southampton in December.

Martin had led Saints back into the Premier League the season prior, but the step up to the higher level was too big for his players, and potentially for the young coach himself, too.

Martin's almost dogmatic approach of heavily possession-based football saw his players make scores of costly errors with the ball, and it ultimately undid a lot of the good work that had been done to get them back to the top flight.

Rangers appoint Martin

Martin, who has been keen to get back in the game since his sacking, is now getting a second crack at first-division football with Rangers, who are set to hand him a three-year deal.

The Scottish giants had also explored the potential appointments of Davide Ancelotti and Steven Gerrard, but Martin ultimately emerged as the top option.

Rangers are set to announce the hire of Martin 'in the coming days,' with the deal close to being officially under wraps. Prior to his stint at Southampton, the former Norwich defender managed MK Dons and Swansea City.

Across his three coaching stints, which have seen him take charge of 252 games, Martin has recorded 99 victories, 60 draws and 93 defeats. The 39-year-old had a brief, 15-game loan spell at Rangers in 2018 and won 29 caps for Scotland.
