Manchester City are closely following a young Argentine star who could step into the void left by Julian Alvarez last summer.

Pep Guardiola has called for his squad to shrink over the summer, going so far as to claim that he will quit if this does not happen.

But one area in which City need more options is their attack, where Erling Haaland was joined by €75 million arrival Omar Marmoush in January.

Now City are following 19-year-old Velez Sarsfield striker Maher Carrizo with an eye on moving for the promising youngster.

According to Velez Digital, Guardiola’s side have already opened talks with a young forward who has made 16 appearances for the Argentine side, scoring seven goals.

Carrizo has a contract until 31 December 2026 and a release clause worth €16 million.

No formal offer has come from Manchester City yet, but the Premier League could be pressed into action by the fact that a host of English clubs are tracking the forward.

Arsenal and Manchester United are also following the progress of Carrizo.

Velez are open to a sale because it could allow them to act in the market.

Maher Carrizo vs Julian Alvarez

City have struggled to replace the impact that Julian Alvarez had at the club prior to his €75m sale to Atletico Madrid last summer. Could Carrizo be the man to step into his role?

The Argentine has shown himself to be more of a pure centre-forward than the versatile Alvarez, but they share some of the same attributes.

Carrizo is agile and quick in his movements and, like the former City star, is regarded as a clinical finisher. He is less powerful at this stage of his career, yet there is still an expectation that he could become a leading player for Argentina in the future.

Even if the two are slightly different in terms of their playing style, the career pathways of the players are similar, and that bond will only strengthen if Carrizo does wind up at Man City.
