Manchester City may have dropped out of the race to sign Florian Wirtz, but Liverpool are still firmly in the mix, according to German media.

The saga surrounding the Bayer Leverkusen wonderkid took another twist on Monday as Man City officially accepted that Wirtz is beyond their financial capabilities this summer.

Man City's decision was confirmation of FootballTransfers' exclusive reporting from early April that several high-ranking figures at the club felt that Wirtz would quite simply be too expensive. The Cityzens plan to bring in several fresh faces and don't want to spend most of their budget on just one player.

This news will surely have been well received at Bayern, who continue to push heavily for the signing of the 22-year-old. The German champions are confident that Wirtz wants to join them. However, the problem is that Leverkusen are reluctant to sell to their rivals.

Finally, there is the spectre of Liverpool. The Reds hold a concrete interest, and Sky Germany revealed last week that Wirtz's trip to England on the 13th was primarily for talks with the Anfield club and not, as previously claimed, with Man City.

Liverpool 'not giving up' on Wirtz

Unlike Man City, Liverpool remain firmly in the race for Wirtz. Indeed, according to Sky, the Premier League winners are 'not giving up' on signing the Germany international.

The outlet adds that signing a creative playmaker is one of the Reds' priorities this summer. However, it is important to mention that Liverpool will only formally activate their pursuit of Wirtz if they get an indication that he is willing to make the move.

Rayan Cherki is an alternative target for Liverpool, and he would be significantly cheaper than Wirtz, who is expected to fetch around €150 million this summer.

Despite Cherki's availability - with both Lyon and the player himself having confirmed that he will depart - the report states that Wirtz is the 'desired target' for Liverpool for the No.10 position.
