Jadon Sancho looks set to find himself in transfer purgatory this summer after suggestions that Chelsea ‘will opt against’ turning his loan from Manchester United into a permanent move.

Sancho came off the bench to score in Chelsea’s 4-1 win over Real Betis in the Europa Conference League final on Wednesday, increasing optimism that he had done enough to secure his future at Stamford Bridge.

Chelsea’s loan of Sancho last summer included an ‘obligation’ to make the 25-year-old’s move a permanent one for £25 million (€29.7m) but they are understood to have an option to send the winger back to United by paying a penalty of £5m.

And The Guardian report that there are ‘indications’ that Chelsea will ‘opt against’ signing Sancho on a permanent basis despite a goalscoring end to his season with the Blues.

It is claimed that, while Enzo Maresca likes Sancho, there is a consideration as to whether the forward has been ‘consistent’ enough, having netted just three goals and four assists in 31 Premier League appearances.

However, Chelsea are keen on adding a right-footed winger to their squad this summer and may choose to target another option, leaving Sancho seemingly heading for an uncertain future.

Sancho’s potential return to Old Trafford would also leave United in a difficult position, with the club desperate to get rid of a player who will have one year remaining on his contract and no future with the team.

There is likely to be interest in Sancho, with former club Dortmund among the sides to have considered a move, while FootballTransfers understands that Wolves would be keen on a deal too as a replacement for the United-bound Matheus Cunha.

However, United may be forced to subsidise a portion of Sancho’s wages in order to force his exit, while the blow of missing out on the fee of Chelsea’s permanent move could affect the Red Devils’ transfer plans.

Chelsea, meanwhile, are continuing to scout options on the wing after closing in on the signing of Liam Delap, with the likes of Nico Williams and Jamie Gittens among the players being considered ahead of Sancho.
