Manchester United have confirmed the departure of one member of the Old Trafford coaching staff on the day it was reported that there is no way back for manager Erik ten Hag at the club.

Tom Huddlestone has revealed that he has stepped down as player-coach for the U21 side, for whom he had a symbolic presence on the field.

“Today marks my final day at this incredible football club,” he writes. “Over the past two seasons, I have experienced remarkable growth and invaluable learning, both on and off the pitch.”

Huddlestone continues by hailing the manner in which Man Utd have allowed him to transition from a playing to a coaching role.

“For any senior professionals considering a coaching career, I highly recommend taking on a ‘playing coach’ role for a season or two,” he added. “This experience has been eye-opening, revealing the dedication involved in planning, executing and analysing every training session, as well as meticulously preparing for the games schedule.

“These efforts are often taken for granted as a player, so witnessing and participating in this side of the game has been truly remarkable.”

Ten Hag in limbo

While Huddlestone's departure has been made official, that of first-team manager Erik ten Hag’s is not.

Reports from several sources point to the departure of the Dutchman, but according to BBC Sport, Man Utd are still insistent that no decision has been made – and Ten Hag is not even aware of the situation.

“BBC Sport understands there has been no contact with Ten Hag or his representatives by United,” it is reported.

The BBC further adds that the situation is reminiscent of that of Louis van Gaal, who won the 2016 FA Cup but was sacked the following day.
