Manchester United legend Edwin van der Sar has thanked Altay Bayindir for his kind words in a recent interview, but reminded the Turkish star that Andre Onana remains his preferred choice in between the sticks at Old Trafford.

Bayindir, 25, joined Man Utd from Fenerbahce for €5 million this summer, but is yet to feature in a Red Devils shirt, with Onana favoured in every competition so far.

The Turkish shot-stopper has settled into life in Manchester well, however, and was recently interviewed by the club for a video posted on Instagram Reels.

During the interview, Bayindir was asked who his favourite Man Utd goalkeeper of all time is. He replied: “My favourite goalkeeper for Manchester United when I was younger, I watched a lot of games of Manchester United, and my favourite goalkeeper, I say this and Edwin van der Sar is a legend, I know him."

The video caught the attention of Van der Sar, who promptly posted a response in the comments section, but it may not have been what Bayindir was expecting.

The Dutchman, who won four Premier League titles during his time at Old Trafford, wrote: “Hi Altay, will see you soon in Manchester and we will have a chat about goalkeeping but my favourite is still Andre as you will know!”

What have fans said about the incident?

Van der Sar’s comments have not resonated particularly well amongst the Man Utd fanbase online.

In response to the Dutchman’s reply, Instagram user @nathanstunna wrote “I honestly don’t understand the point of this comment”, while @berkayberk7 added: “What’s the point of including Onana in this comment?? He was not even mentioned here. He was just praising you.”

Van der Sar made 266 appearances for Man Utd in a six-year spell at the club before retiring in 2011. He resigned as Ajax’s chief executive at the end of last season.
