The Reds missed out on primary midfield target Jude Bellingham after he agreed terms with Real Madrid, and quickly turned their attention to sealing a deal for Mac Allister.
Chelsea's Mason Mount is also wanted by Jurgen Klopp, although a deal for the England international has been complicated by Mauricio Pochettino's impending appointment at Stamford Bridge. The former Tottenham Hotspur boss is said to be a huge admirer of Mount and is keen for the 24-year-old to extend his contract at the club.
However, Liverpool are set to make a statement signing in Mac Allister, who helped Argentina to World Cup glory in December.

Liverpool's midfield revamp
Klopp is set to lose Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain, Naby Keita, and the aforementioned Milner on free transfers, and wants at least three new midfielders this summer.
Mac Allister has been linked with a move to Anfield for months, while his current Seagulls team-mate Moises Caicedo is also admired by the Liverpool hierarchy, according to reports.
The Mirror detail that Liverpool have enquired about the possible availability of Aurelien Tchouameni, after losing the battle for his signature to Real Madrid last summer, but have been told he isn’t for sale, despite being dropped from the starting XI in the Spanish capital.
The Reds are set to face competition from Arsenal, Chelsea and Man Utd for any targets this summer, with all four clubs in the hunt for new central midfield talent.
