Liverpool striker Darwin Nunez can follow in the footsteps of Fernando Torres to become an Anfield great, Rafael Benitez has claimed.

Nunez has made a tricky start to life following a big-money move from Benfica last summer, the value of which could rise to as much as €100 million if he triggers a series of bonuses in it.

The Uruguay international has scored six Premier League goals for the Reds, including one on Saturday as they defeated Newcastle 2-0 at St James’ Park to truly ignite their top-four challenge.

Benitez, who led Liverpool to the 2005 Champions League trophy with a historic victory on penalties over AC Milan in Istanbul, says that the 23-year-old reminds him of Torres, who arrived in the club in 2007 for a massive fee and with similarly big expectations.

Klopp will worry about Nunez, Rafa says

“My feeling is you are watching the game - as a manager you are really worried,” Benitez told Sky Sports.

“He has the pace to do that and run in behind. For you as a manger, he is someone you have to worry about then he will finish.

“When Fernando Torres first came to Liverpool, he struggled with putting chances away - he was a great player but he wasn't a great finisher.

“We worked with him and in time he became the Fernando we knew.”

The former Real Madrid boss continued: “He is a hard worker - he's always making the runs and doing the right things.

“After he finished and scored a great goal manager will be happy.”

There are doubts as to whether Nunez will be fit for Tuesday’s Champions League match with Real Madrid after he injured his shoulder against Newcastle.

He has seen his Estimated Transfer Value (ETV) rise from €26m in July to close to €45m presently, showing that he is steadying improving.
