Gabriel Jesus has completed his transfer to Arsenal from Manchester City for a fee of €52 million (£45m) with the striker having claimed an iconic shirt number on his move to the Emirates Stadium.

The Brazil international scored 95 times for City in 233 appearances, and while the Gunners will want him to sharpen up in front of goal a little, they are confident that in the 25-year-old they have a long-term upgrade on Alexandre Lacazette, who left the club on a free transfer this summer when his contract expired.

What is Gabriel Jesus’ Arsenal shirt number?

Gabriel Jesus has been given the No.9 jersey at Arsenal. He is taking the number from Lacazette.

Although the No.9 shirt is generally a revered number, at Arsenal there have been surprisingly few iconic players to wear this jersey in club history. Before Lacazette, the last truly successful player to have this shirt was Jose Antonio Reyes in the club’s golden era early in the century, the best part of 20 years ago.

Indeed, it is a jersey that has generally brought more disappointment than success in recent times. Among those to wear the shirt include Lucas Perez, Park Chu-young, Julio Baptista and Francis Jeffers, all of whom failed to live up to the reputation of the jersey.

What squad number did Gabriel Jesus have at Man City?

Jesus also wore the No.9 jersey at Manchester City. It had been in his possession since the 2019/20 season, when he claimed it after a couple of seasons when it was not in use. When he first joined the club, meanwhile, he wore the No.33 shirt, which was also the jersey that he took when he broke through in Brazil with Palmeiras. However, he finished his time in South America with a brief stint wearing the No.12 shirt.

That Gabriel Jesus is back in his regular No.9 jersey comes as little surprise as images of him on the Emirates pitch with the shirt were leaked last week.
