When Hollywood stars Ryan Reynolds and Rob McElhenney took over ownership of Wrexham in February of 2021, they outlined a plan to bring top-flight football to the club.

What has came since is an unprecedented three successive promotions to League One, League Two and then the Championship.

The dream of Premier League football is in sight, but the step up to the Championship has been tough for the club.

In the 2025/26 campaign, they are 18th in the table, with two wins, four draws, three losses and 10 points from their opening nine matches.

During the summer, they spent £33 million on players which was more than the likes of European giants like Barcelona, Aston Villa, Lazio, Celtic, Rangers, Monaco and Valencia.

Nathan Broadhead, the club's most expensive player ever, was signed this summer but has struggled with form and injuries.

After the lowkey start, they want to spend again, with a goalscorer the top of their wishlist.

It has been reported that Reynolds has personally reached out Manchester City officials for transfer strategy advice, particularly on scouting.

A source has told CEO Today of Reynolds: “Ryan is patient, but he’s also a perfectionist. He understands investment cycles - he built companies that way - but football is a different world. You can’t script form, luck, or goals.

“Reynolds, ever the networker, has reached out to contacts within Pep Guardiola’s Manchester City setup for advice on scouting and analytics.”

The report states Wrexham have “evolved into one of the most fascinating business experiments in sport - a masterclass in how storytelling and finance can collide, sometimes uncomfortably."

Wrexham may have started slowly in the Championship, but they are only five points adrift of the play offs at this early stages so a run at promotion is still a possibility and Reynolds and McElhenney want to get to the Premier League as quickly as possible.
