Raheem Sterling arrested on suspicion of drug-driving after crashing Lamborghini

Raheem Sterling has been arrested on suspicion of drug-driving after crashing his Lamborghini into a barrier on the M3.

Shortly before 9:00 AM, Hampshire Police responded to a single-vehicle collision near the Minley Interchange. A vehicle had crashed into the motorway barriers, but no other cars were involved and no injuries were reported.

It was subsequently confirmed that the incident involved the Feyenoord attacker, who is back in England following the conclusion of the Eredivisie campaign in the Netherlands.

Hampshire Police outlined the details of the incident in an official statement.

"Just before 9am on Thursday, we received reports that a Lamborghini was in collision with barriers on the M3 southbound, close to the Minley Interchange. No other vehicles were involved and no injuries were reported," said the statement.

"The driver, a 31-year-old man, from Berkshire, has been arrested on suspicion of driving a vehicle whilst unfit through drugs, driving dangerously, possession of a Class C drug and failing to provide a specimen. He has been bailed while our enquiries continue."

Sterling has been released on bail as the police continue their investigation.

The former Liverpool and Man City star's move to Feyenoord hasn't panned out the way anyone hoped. After tearing up his Chelsea contract and joining Robin van Persie’s squad as a free agent back in February, his first crack at playing abroad has been a pretty tough slog.

The on-pitch numbers tell the story. He hasn't managed to find the back of the net at all, chipping in with just a single assist during his handful of appearances. Because the output just hasn’t been there, Van Persie has mostly kept him on the fringes, leaving Sterling to scrap for minutes and limiting him to a pretty meagre amount of game time as the season wound down.

The staff in Rotterdam were quick to praise his work ethic and professionalism in training, but unfortunately for player and club, this didn't translate to anything meaningful on the pitch.

As of 1 July, he'll find himself as a free agent again with legal matters potentially lingering in the background.

The Telegraph previously reported that Sterling remains keen to play at a high level and that he wants to continue playing on the continent in Europe rather than returning to England or potentially moving to MLS in the United States.
