Marcus Rashford's Man Utd future changes again as €55m alternative found
Marcus Rashford remains in limbo at Manchester United after reported suitors Bayern Munich agreed a €55million (£47.5m) deal to sign PSV Eindhoven attacker Ismael Saibari, according to Fabrizio Romano.
Rashford joined Barcelona on a season-long loan from United last season and helped them retain their La Liga title, scoring eight goals and recording seven assists in the Spanish top flight.
However, according to The Athletic, Hansi Flick’s side have cooled their interest in triggering a €30million (£26m) option to sign the 28-year-old permanently, with United reportedly keen to sell.
Rashford, who is currently preparing for England’s World Cup opener against Croatia on Wednesday, said in May that he wants to remain with Barcelona on permanent basis.
His hopes suffered a major blow, however, when Barcelona completed the signing of Anthony Gordon from Newcastle United for a fee worth up to €80million (£70m), as per widespread reports.
Despite his preference to join Barcelona, Rashford reportedly received a lifeline from Bundesliga giants Bayern, who recently made contact with United regarding the winger’s availability, according to transfers specialist Romano.
But that possibility appears to have been dashed after Italian Romano reported on Monday that Bayern are now on the verge of signing Morocco star Saibari after agreeing a fee with Eredivisie champions PSV.
Saibari, who scored 19 goals in all competitions for Peter Bosz’s side last season, scored a wonderful goal against Brazil in Morocco’s World Cup opener on Saturday.
The 25-year-old emerged through PSV’s youth system in 2020 and has made 142 appearances for them, scoring 42 goals. He has also won eight honours with the club including the last three Eredivisie titles.
Saibari will look to continue his fine form in front of goal when Morocco lock horns with Scotland on Friday, before his side wrap up their Group C commitments against Haiti five days later.
Rashford looking to impress at World Cup as United pursue Fernandes
Rashford meanwhile will hope to start ahead of Gordon when England make their World Cup bow against Croatia this week, with Thomas Tuchel’s side also set to face Ghana on Tuesday, 23 June and Panama four days later in Group L.
United, on the other hand, are pressing ahead with plans to strengthen manager Michael Carrick’s squad ahead of the 2026-27 season, with The Times claiming they are poised to sign Mateus Fernandes from West Ham United in a €92m (£80m) deal.
The Red Devils have made revamping their midfield a priority this summer, with Fernandes, 21, having caught the eye despite the Hammers’ relegation from the Premier League last season.
