Aaron Ramsey has expressed his surprise at seeing his contract with Pumas terminated.

This past summer, he became the first high-profile British player to sign for a Mexican team when he joined Pumas, having previously served as caretaker manager for his beloved Cardiff City.

Unfortunately for Cardiff and Ramsey, they were relegated to League One in his short tenure and he departed at the conclusion of the league season.

His playing days not over, he made the bold decision to sign for Pumas to much fanfare. Much like the rest of his career previous, though, he was plagued by injury and fitness issues and only made six appearances overall.

Ramsey was undoubtedly impacted by the loss of his dog, Halo, who went missing near a shelter in Guanajuato. He offered a large reward for the dog's return, but she never did.

It was initially believed that Ramsey and Pumas mutually terminated his contract, but in a recent social media post he insists he was surprised at being made a free agent.

“I would like to thank the Mexican people for their kindness and generosity and making me and my family feel so welcome in Mexico City," he posted on Instagram.

"I also want to give a big thanks to the manager, the coaching staff and particularly the medical staff for helping me through what was a difficult time with injuries.

“However with their help and a lot of hard work I was ready and match fit for the remaining games and I was looking forward to giving my best to the Pumas. Unfortunately my contract was terminated which was a surprise and obviously disappointing. Therefore I had no choice but to come home to Wales. Thank you again for all the support through the time we spent in Mexico. It’s a beautiful place and we will definitely come back to visit soon.”

Ramsey has returned to Wales and hasn't yet hinted whether or not he plans to retire.
