Weston McKennie in talks for MLS free transfer, Fabrizio Romano confirms
Weston McKennie is in talks with a number of MLS clubs over a free transfer next summer.
That is according to Matteo Moretto, who revealed on Fabrizio Romano’s YouTube channel that there is a very good chance of McKennie returning to his homeland to play in Major League Soccer.
McKennie’s contract at Juventus expires at the end of the season and Moretto says that a renewal is now looking unlikely.
McKennie contract talks frozen
The American midfielder had been close to extending his contract in April but the deal was never signed.
When there was a change in management in May and June, plans changed also with regards to McKennie’s future at the club.
Contract talks are now completely frozen and there is little sign of them being reignited.
Moretto says it is not impossible that contract talks could be resumed but as it stands this is not on the agenda.
Several MLS clubs, who have not been named, are negotiating with McKennie’s entourage about signing him on a free transfer in June 2026.
McKennie would be potentially open to returning to the United States, although much will also depend on the salary on offer.

Juventus came close to extending the American's contract in April, but failed to sign a contract extension.
As of now, McKennie's departure in June is much more likely than a renewal.

What is for sure is that a departure from Juventus is likelier than a contract renewal, says Moretto.
McKennie signed for Juventus in 2020 from Schalke and has gone on to make over 150 appearances for the club.
He left Juve in January 2023 to join Leeds on loan but his loan wasn’t made permanent because the side were relegated from the Premier League.
He returned to Juventus where he has stayed ever since. McKennie has won two Coppa Italia trophies and a Supercoppa Italiana in Turin.
He has been capped 60 times by the United States, scoring 11 goals.
