Ismael Bennacer is AC Milan's highest-valued player, beating Rafael Leao to the punch.

Milan were the most successful club in world football in the early late 1980s and early 1990s with Dutch trio Marco van Basten, Ruud Gullit and Frank Rijkaard in their ranks, and they remain a giant of the game.

The Rossoneri ended a decade-long wait for a Serie A title in 2022, and although Silvio Berlusconi is long gone as club owner, they are still able to shell out significant wages - some of the biggest in Italy.

Like most Serie A clubs today, Milan struggle to compete with the financial might of the Premier League, which has seen their transfer strategy shift over the years.

Usually, players at the tail end of their career, like Olivier Giroud, or youngsters like Leao, who can peak at San Siro, are signed - although Charles De Ketelaere was recruited from Club Brugge for €32 million in the summer window of 2022.

Bennacer's new deal has made him the highest-paid player at the club, above USMNT right-back Sergino Dest, who has struggled since joining on loan from Barcelona on transfer deadline day last summer.

The next-highest permanent earner is Theo Hernandez who is on just over €5m until 2026.

Previous top earner Zlatan Ibrahimovic took a significant pay cut to stay at Milan for one final year, largely due to the fact that he has missed a large portion of the campaign with a knee injury.

Milan hope to have a new player at the top of their wage bill for next season as they are looking to extend Leao's contract and give him a huge pay rise to ward off Chelsea, with his current deal set to expire in 2024.

Olivier Giroud is out of contract at the end of the season, while Brahim Diaz and Tiemoue Bakayoko are set to return to Chelsea and Real Madrid respectively.
