Barcelona youngster Lamine Yamal has announced that he has split with Argentinian singer Nicki Nicole as his private life increasingly plays out in public.

The 18-year-old has been in the spotlight non-stop in recent weeks due to his antics off the pitch. Yamal has become one of the most recognisable figures in football, which has naturally entailed heightened media scrutiny.

He made negative headlines over the summer with his lavish birthday celebrations and, more recently, faced fierce criticism from Real Madrid for jokingly accusing them of cheating.

Yamal, who has been dealing with some niggling injury issues, was quiet in Barcelona's El Clasico defeat, which only further stoked the public discourse on him.

Yamal previously embraced the limelight, but he is now finding out the hard way that not every bit of attention is desirable. There have even been suggestions of a locker room revolt against him because of alleged attitude problems.

Yamal announces breakup

With all the drama surrounding him, it is easy to forget that Yamal is only 18. He has only officially been an adult for a few months, and Barcelona are rightly trying to shield him from all the noise. "I will always protect and support Lamine,” Hansi Flick said at today's press conference.

A potential reason as to why Yamal perhaps hasn't quite been himself recently has now been revealed: he has split with his Argentine singer-songwriter girlfriend, Nicki Nicole.

"We are not together anymore," Yamal confirmed to social media influencer Javi Hoyos on Saturday afternoon. He also made sure to dismiss some libellous claims from the Spanish press that he had cheated on Nicole.

"It has not been because of any infidelity. We have simply separated, and that’s it. Everything that is coming out has nothing to do with our relationship. I have not been unfaithful or taken someone else."

The youngster is now looking to bounce back and get back to his best. Regarding his potential availability, Flick said: "He's doing well, I've spoken to him, but some days he feels some discomfort and pain. He's working very hard and has improved. He's progressing well."
