Revealed: The details behind Vinicius Junior's blockbuster new Real Madrid deal

Vinicius Junior has finally put to bed all the speculation about his future by signing a lucrative new contract with Real Madrid.

The Brazilian's previous deal ran out in the summer of 2027 and prior to the new contract being agreed, he was given an ultimatum by the Real Madrid hierarchy: either sign a new deal or be sold this summer.

Due to the negotiations between club and player taking longer than anticipated, this allowed Arsenal to dream of signing Vinicius Junior in this window, with rumours of a blockbuster €150 million transfer doing the rounds over the last few weeks.

FootballTransfers exclusively revealed that Arsenal were willing to break the bank, and their wage structure, to land the winger, should he be put up for sale.

Vinicius would have commanded a club-record transfer fee and salary, but Arsenal’s stance over the deal was understood to be simple: if a player of his calibre is available and ready to join the club, they will do whatever it takes to complete a deal.

Arsenal have been prepared to execute this strategy before.

FootballTransfers exclusively revealed that when Kylian Mbappe was nearing the end of his PSG contract before moving to Real Madrid as a free agent, the Gunners were willing to put together a package capable of fighting for his signature.

Alas, Vini ended up signing a new contract with Real Madrid and cynics would suggest that the interest from Arsenal was being used by the player and his agent to ensure lucrative new terms on the new deal, which runs until 2032.

"Vinicius Jr. has become one of the most important players in one of the most successful periods in our history," a statement on the official club website said in part.

He posted on Instagram: "Eight years at the Bernabeu are too short... Six more years, and then forever."

The reason for the delay in negotiations over the summer is that Vini was demanding €30m a year to put pen to paper, while Madrid were offering around €20m. It was around the period of that stalemate that interest from Arsenal started to generate.

This week was seen as a key few days and numerous outlets reported that his future would be decided either way before the weekend.

Real Madrid officially made the announcement of his renewal on Thursday, so how did both parties come to an agreement?

Brazilian outlet Globo reports that Real Madrid ultimately did not go higher than the €20m base salary that was offered previously and that is what Vini Jr will earn, an increase from his previous deal which was €17.5m a year.

However, he has received significant increases in bonuses such as goals scored, appearances, and his signing-on bonus. It is believed these incentives will take him close to the €30m a year he wanted.

Madrid ultimately decided that looking for a new superstar left winger, in the current market, would present a much more expensive proposition than renewing Vini. They have recently splurged €140m on Yan Diomande of RB Leipzig after a long(ish) saga and didn't want to put themselves in such a position again.

Jose Mourinho was also key to the negotiations as he directly spoke with the former Flamengo forward on a few occasions to discuss staying at the club.

The player has won 14 trophies with Real Madrid, including two Champions League titles, three Club World Cups, two UEFA Super Cups, three LaLiga titles, one Copa del Rey, and three Spanish Super Cups.

One of his biggest achievements came in the 2022 Champions League final, when he scored the winning goal against Liverpool. He also scored in the 2024 Champions League final as Real Madrid beat Borussia Dortmund.
