Kylian Mbappe has been left fuming by the incompetence of Real Madrid’s medical staff, who sent him for an MRI on the wrong knee and stand accused of using the free version of AI to diagnose supplements for their players.

France international forward Mbappe, who has scored 38 goals in 35 games for Los Blancos this season, was left at risk of serious injury after Los Blancos incredibly scanned the wrong knee when he was sent for a check after complaining of pain.

This was subsequently mocked by Itziar Gonzalez, a nutritionist briefly employed by Real Madrid, who revealed that medical staff were reliant on the free version of ChatGPT to prescribe supplements for the players.

What happened with Mbappe?

Real Madrid made an incredible medical error when diagnosing Mbappe’s knee injury: they scanned the wrong joint, according to respected RMC journalist Daniel Riolo.

He said: “The doctor's first surprise was seeing that there hadn't been a clinical examination. And that's pretty crazy. No clinical examination, that's the first surprise, then the error by scanning the wrong knee, which is kind of mind-boggling.

“Mbappe’s camp were perplexed and can’t understand how something like that could happen.

“That’s the biggest thing that everyone’s talking about in Spain today. People are wondering what could have happened if he’d pushed it, if his knee had given way completely and his thigh too.”

Mbappe’s reaction

Mbappe missed several games due to the knee problem, but told the press on Monday:

“My knee’s doing very well. I’ve recovered 100%,” he said. “I was lucky enough to get the right diagnosis when I went back to Paris, and together we were able to find the best plan to get back to my best level, to be in shape for the end of the season with Real Madrid and at the World Cup.”

Despite this public calm, Mbappe was left ‘monumentally angry’ by the mishap, according to Marca, but Riolo claims that there are no long-term repercussions for Real Madrid – for now, at least.

“There was a lot of concern. First there was surprise, then anger. Now it’s the end of March and he’s gone to Boston. The doctor says he’s 100%,” Riolo said.

“I believe the doctor told him that it would be better if he didn’t play the Champions League second leg against Manchester City. Real Madrid played him a little, and a bit in the derby as well, but we’ve not seen the great Mbappe yet because he’s not moving very well.

“I think he’s extremely relieved today. Truly relieved.

“I think he doesn't hold it against Real Madrid because it's in the past now. But if he had injured his knee, we wouldn't be talking like this and it wouldn't be the same story. Today we want to turn the page and he was smiling when he left for the United States.”

‘Ignorant, narcissistic and well-connected individuals’

A subplot of this story is the reaction of former Real Madrid nutritionist Itziar Gonzalez, who has further underlined the amateurish nature of the medical setup at the Bernabeu in the wake of these revelations.

Taking to Instagram stories, she said: “I've said it before, but it's very easy to humiliate me to protect these people who work here to be friends. The worst part is that they're still there.

“Although I don't know what's worse: this, or the fact that they prescribe supplements based on free ChatGPT results.

“Thank you, Kylian. I hope they recruit competent and educated people rather than ignorant, narcissistic, and well-connected individuals who only harm the guys.”

Gonzalez departed Real Madrid in 2025, but evidently left with a sour taste, announcing in December that she had filed a lawsuit against the club.
