Liverpool star makes major contract announcement
Liverpool was gripped by the contract saga of Mo Salah, Virgil van Dijk and Trent Alexander-Arnold last season, but there will not be a repeat of that drama with Ibrahima Konate.
Konate is out of contract in June 2026 and, as things stand, is destined to become a free agent at that point.
Talks over a new deal have been ongoing for some time, but there have been reports of interest from the likes of Real Madrid and Bayern Munich in the France international defender.
Should he want to open contract talks with any foreign club, he is eligible to do so from 1 January.
Konate, meanwhile, has not been drawn into the noise around his future and has assured fans that they will know what lies ahead for him very soon.
"As for me, I’ve seen a lot of things, particularly in the media. I saw that Liverpool made me a new offer recently," he told the media ahead of France’s World Cup qualifier away to Azerbaijan.
"I don’t know where that info comes from. But now, my agents are still discussing with Liverpool. I hope my decision will be made and that I’ll be able to announce what I’ll do very soon."
Konate explains the shock of signing for Liverpool
Konate also explained in a column with Ouest France how he was initially blown away at Liverpool.
“Before my transfer was announced, the manager Jurgen Klopp warned me: ‘Your status is going to change,’” he said. “A day after the announcement, my Instagram account had tripled its followers.
“In Liverpool, football means everything. The heart of this city beats to the rhythm of the Reds.
“It wasn’t so much my new surroundings that shocked me, but the sheer size of the club.
“Everything is different. After signing for Liverpool, without having even trained, I was recognised on the other side of the world on holiday with my family.
“I discovered quickly that the media pressure is huge. A bad performance can have serious repercussions, whereas at RB Leipzig, our every move wasn’t scrutinised. The football is different, too. Unforgiving. The slightest mistake is seriously punished.”
Konate’s Estimated Transfer Value (ETV) sits at €41.3m – just above the €40m Liverpool paid Leipzig for him. This figure will spring up should he sign a new contract.
