Kylian Mbappe faces fan revolt as police forced to step in
Real Madrid superstar Kylian Mbappe is facing a fan revolt over his ownership of SM Caen, according to French media.
The France captain acquired the turmoil-stricken, financially struggling club last year in what initially looked to be a feel-good story. Mbappe and his family aimed to bring Caen back from Ligue 2 to Ligue 1.
However, this ostensible fairytale quickly turned into an unmitigated disaster. By late 2024, protests against Mbappe's ownership began to proliferate as Caen had been sucked into a relegation battle.
Banners reading “Mbappe, SMC is not your toy” were seen at games, and it later emerged that even some players had grievances with the Mbappe clan. In April, Caen's all-time record goalscorer Alexandre Mendy blasted the owners for not allowing him to pursue a summer move to Sunderland.
Mbappe's first season in charge of Caen ended in relegation to the third-tier National. If that wasn't yet bad enough, a new low was hit at the weekend in the Coupe de France.
Anti-Mbappe protests turn violent
The proud Normandy club are languishing in mid-table no man's land in the third division, and on Saturday, they were knocked out of the cup by sixth-tier Bayeux after a shock 3-2 loss.
L'Equipe reports that supporters tried to storm the tunnel of Bayeux's Stade Henri-Jeanne in the aftermath of the game before security had to set up an emergency corridor to allow the Caen players to reach their team bus.
The players were then confronted by a large group of angry fans when they returned to Caen, and two people even had to be removed from the scene by police.
In hopes that the whole thing would blow over, Caen called off training on Sunday and only told the players requiring medical attention to come in for some check-ups. However, the situation remains tense, with fans fearing that another relegation could be on the cards if things don't improve quickly.
Sebastien, a member of the supporters' group We Are Malherbe, told the French outlet: “Beyond the results, it’s mainly the performance against Bayeux that matters: we lost, and that was to be expected.
"We can’t even say we were unlucky; it’s just that we lost to a Regional 1 team with our strongest lineup, and there’s no arguing with that. We were at the same level as in previous league matches.
"The fans are devastated because the club is in freefall, but we still don’t know if we’ve hit rock bottom. This summer, there were a lot of departures and arrivals; we were hoping for a clean slate and a new chapter, but the players have changed, and it’s still not working.
"Instead of aiming for the top of the table, we’re going to be fighting relegation.”
