Alexia Putellas has explained why she turned down a big-money move to Paris Saint-Germain in the summer.

The Spain international is one of the most celebrated female footballers of all time and at Barcelona has won nine Primera Division titles, three Champions League titles and nine Copa de la Reina trophies.

As an individual she is the recipient of two Ballon d'Or trophies, winning in 2011 and 2022.

She has made more appearances for the Spanish national team than any other woman and also won the World Cup with La Roja in 2023.

It is this resume that saw her strongly linked with a €1.1 million move to PSG which was turned down.

Speaking in an interview with Sport, Putellas said: "What happened with that offer is that it was publicised in the media, but it wasn't the first one. The process was short and easy. When it arrived, as with the other offers, I spoke to the club: ‘What's going on? What do you want? Are you counting on me or not?’ And that was the end of the discussion: the present is the shirt I wear."

Putellas' current contract runs out in 2026 and although she proclaims her love for Barcelona, she stopped short of confirming that she will stay beyond this season, even if her contract has the option to extend by a year.

"My relationship with the club has always been one of trust and naturalness," she explained.

"Everyone knows what it means to me to play here: it's not a typical 'work for pay' relationship. It goes much further than that. I've spent almost half my life at Barca, I've played 95% of my career here. This will continue as long as, on the one hand, I continue to feel that motivation, energy and daily demand to perform at my best and meet my goals, and, on the other hand, the club feels the same way."

If Putellas had signed for PSG, it would have been just the sixth occasion that a female player had transferred for a fee of €1m or more.
