Barcelona have been condemned for their stance towards a long-time servant of the club, who they are offering €6 million to leave Camp Nou.

Marc-Andre ter Stegen is set to be paid off to depart this summer, with the arrival of Joan Garcia from Espanyol set to end the Germany international’s career in Catalunya.

Ter Stegen missed virtually all of the 2024/25 campaign, and in his absence veteran goalkeeper Wojciech Szczesny came out of retirement to shine.

Now Barca are seeking to add the highly rated Joan Garcia to their ranks for next season, with the Espanyol goalkeeper seen as too good a player to pass up. Interest has already come from several Premier League sides in the 24-year-old but the Blaugrana are set to win the race for the shot-stopper.

Fabrizio Romano warned on Friday that this was set to pose a “problem” to Barca behind the scenes due to the presence of three important goalkeepers and now Sport reports that they have elected to resolve the problem by offloading Ter Stegen.

It reports: “When Ter Stegen returns from Germany duty, the club intends to speak with the goalkeeper, which they haven’t done so far, to analyse the situation and put an exit proposal on the table.

“Barca will offer him payment for the next year of his contract so that he accepts a free transfer and can negotiate with whoever he deems appropriate.”

Ter Stegen: I’ll be in Barcelona next year

Barcelona have concerns that Ter Stegen will not leave without a fight. Indeed, Sport claims that he doesn’t want to leave and wants to continue with the Blaugrana.

The goalkeeper has significant power in this situation as he still has three years left to run on his contract, which is worth over €6m per year.

“I know I’ll be at Barcelona next year,” he said last weekend. “No one has spoken to me. Barca is one of the biggest clubs and competition is normal. For me, the situation isn’t going to change.

I'm very excited about next season with a very young, dynamic team with a lot of enthusiasm. We saw that this year . And now, with the experience I've gained, I hope we'll be even more successful.”

He added a few days later: “Nobody has said anything to me about this. But I’m not worried, I know I’ll be in Barcelona next year.”

’That's not how you treat a legend’ – Fans react

The news that Barcelona are ready to axe Ter Stegen has received criticism from fans on social media.

One writes: “This is shameful behaviour from Barcelona.”

Another added:” That’s not how you treat a legend.”

Continuing in that same vein, a third chipped in: “The LaLiga title Barca won under Xavi, Ter Stegen won it for him. Barcelona fans are so ungrateful. I could remember how many 1-0s Barca had that season.”
