RB Leipzig have confirmed that Dani Olmo faces a period on the sidelines, amid speculation that he could leave the club in January for Barcelona.

The 23-year-old attacking midfielder has had a slow start to the season, largely due to his participation with Spain at the Olympics.

Olmo has played in only two of Leipzig’s five fixtures in the Bundesliga to date and was a substituted out against both Bayern Munich and Koln before an hour had been played.

It was his sparkling displays last season, however, that caught the eye of Barcelona. During that campaign, he featured 32 in the league, scored five goals and laid on 10 more.

Subsequently, he was one of the stars as Spain made a run to the semi-finals of Euro 2020.

Olmo faces a setback for his aspirations this season, however, as he has been ruled out for several weeks due to injury.

“He was present in training this week but we did an MRI scan on Thursday and found out that he’ll be away for a few weeks,” head coach Jesse Marsch said.

There is no prospect of Olmo playing against Hertha Berlin or Bochum in the Bundesliga, while he will also miss the Champions League clash with Club Brugge. It is still unclear how quickly he might return after the international break, though.

Dani Olmo is a player who is very rarely injured. Indeed, this durability has to be one of his key selling points as he is available for virtually every match.

He has never before missed a significant period of time because of a knock and this is set to be his longest absence from the field.

Nevertheless, with his season having begun in a stop-start fashion, it may be some weeks before Olmo can show the type of form that attracted Barcelona to him in the first place.
