Real Madrid attacking midfielder Marco Asensio has suggested that he wants to stay and fight for his spot in the team next season.

The 25-year-old talent made 48 appearances for Zinedine Zidane’s team over the course of the season but most of those were late substitute cameos in matches.

As a result, Asensio was far off the pace for much of the campaign and only managed to bag seven goals and two assists.

With a contract until 2023, Asensio could be one of a number of squad players that is sold this summer to finance new signings in the transfer window.

However, it seems as though the Spaniard would rather get his head down and regain the trust of his manager next season.

“It has been a tough season, where despite the obstacles we have made a great effort as a team, fighting to the end to win,” said Asensio in an interview with Marca

“Personally, it has been a year of much learning, overcoming pain and situations that have made me much stronger and continue to grow as a player.

“Now it’s time to stop and face the next season with all the strength in the world to give my best. Thank you Madridistas for your support, next season will be easier with you closer.”

Who could leave Madrid this summer?

Whether or not Asensio remains at the club next season remains to be seen, but if he does go he likely won’t be the only one.

Big hitters like Gareth Bale and Eden Hazard have both been linked with moves back to England, as Tottenham Hotspur and Chelsea reportedly chase the signatures of the respective attackers.

Similarly, central defender Raphael Varane has been linked with a summer move to Manchester United, as has club captain Sergio Ramos as he continues to run down his expiring contract.
