Ex-Man Utd keeper Barthez has found a new club

World Cup-winning goalkeeper Fabien Barthez, who turned out for Manchester United between 2004 and 2006 is back in football.

The 49-year-old has joined up with Ligue 2 side Toulouse, where he will work in a consultancy role regarding the coaching of the club’s goalkeepers.

He had previously been a member of Laurent Blanc’s technical team with the France squad, while he also enjoyed a brief motorsports career and raced the 24 Hours of Le Mans in 2014.

Speaking about his new role to Toulouse’s official website, he explained: “My passion pushed me to invest in the role of a consultant. In collaboration with the coaching staff, I want to convey and share my vision of the goalkeeping position in its entirety to the professional squad and to the academy.

“I would like to thank president Damien Comolli, the management team, as well as head coach Patrice Garande, goalkeeping coach Rudy Riou and academy director Denis Zanko for their trust and their welcome.”

Barthez enjoyed a highly successful playing career, the pinnacle of which arrived in 1998 when he was in goal as France won the World Cup on home soil. He won the Yashin Award for the tournament, which is given to the outstanding goalkeeper.

At club level, his highlight arrived with Marseille, with whom he lifted the Champions League title in 1992/93.

League titles, meanwhile, would follow at Monaco in 1997 and 2000, as well as with Manchester United in 2001 and 2003.
