After lengthy negotiations, Messi has agreed to remain in Florida, with some reports indicating that he is poised to put pen to paper on a new three-year deal.

The eight-time Ballon d’Or winner has been with the club for a little over two years since arriving in the USA in July 2023 following an unhappy spell at PSG. His current deal is due to expire at the end of 2025, yet Inter Miami’s all-time leading scorer and assist maker is now poised sign a new agreement for an extended period, the Miami Herald reports.

According to the US source, Messi will sign his new contract in the next 10 days.

The Messi effect at Inter Miami

Messi earns a remarkable $20.45 million per season, with the initial value of his contract with Inter Miami estimated at $130-150m, including equity in the club when he retires.

But his impact on the franchise as a whole has been profound. The Miami Herald reports that prior to Messi’s arrival, the Herons’ income was around the $60m mark. Latest projections indicate that they are on course to make $300m this year.

The 38-year-old Argentine attacker has allowed Inter Miami to ramp up their ticket prices and cash in on lucrative sponsorship and merchandise deals.

Messi’s impact in MLS has been hailed by US soccer stars.

Speaking to Fox Sports, Landon Donovan, who played for Bayern Munich and Everton, explained: “There’s just a buzz around MLS because Messi is here. There’s a buzz around the country because a player of his stature, who many would argue is possibly the best player that’s ever played the game, and he’s playing here in America, in a league that for decades people have frowned upon and looked down upon.”

Messi has scored 62 career goals for Inter Miami in 75 appearances, while he also has 30 assists for the MLS franchise.
