Arsenal given free run at Rodrygo as Man City end €100m chase
Arsenal have been given a free run at Rodrygo after Manchester City pulled out of the race to sign the Real Madrid star.
Man City had made Rodrygo their top attacking target in the closing weeks of the window, with Pep Guardiola personally pushing for the player.
However, City first needed to sell Savinho before buying Rodrygo and Guillem Balague reports that that won't be happening now as negotiations with Tottenham have failed.
Savinho will be staying at City this season and as a result City will no longer go for Rodrygo.
Rodrygo to Arsenal?
This potentially gives Arsenal a free run at Rodrygo.
The Gunners still plan to sign one more outside attacker, who can drift to the left, before the end of the transfer window.
Eberechi Eze is the other main target, while Ademola Lookman has also entered the list of targets.
A transfer for Rodrygo would not come cheap, though.
Madrid are reported to be demanding €100-120 million to sell the attacker.
Rodrygo is available for transfer this summer after falling down the pecking order at Madrid, and failing to impress new manager Xabi Alonso so far.
AS reports that Rodrygo will demand a salary of €12 million net per season, making the transfer even more expensive.
The signing of Kylian Mbappe last summer saw Rodrygo's status within the squad diminish.
With the focus on Mbappe, Vinicius Junior and Jude Bellingham it has proven hard to find star status and space.
And at the Club World Cup he fell even further down the pecking order.
Rodrygo at Real Madrid
Rodrygo joined Real Madrid from Santos for €40 million in the summer of 2019.
The 24-year-old has gone on to make 267 appearances for Real Madrid over the last five seasons, scoring 68 goals.
He has often been used as substitute but has proved a crucial member of the squad in La Liga and the Champions League.
He most famously impacted Madrid’s 2022 Champions League triumph.
He scored key goals in the quarter final win over Chelsea and the dramatic late comeback victory over Man City in the semi final.
Rodrygo scored in the 89th and 91st minute in the second leg over City to take the game into extra time which Madrid won. The Blancos then lifted the cup in the final.
His contract expires in June 2028.
