Chelsea would reportedly be interested in signing Liverpool flop Florian Wirtz if he becomes available next year, according to Germany legend Lothar Matthaus.

The 23-year-old joined Liverpool from Bayer Leverkusen for a whopping €125 million last summer and he was expected to immediately elevate the level of the Reds’ attack. However, Wirtz has struggled immensely.

The Germany international has only scored seven goals in 56 games since his arrival at Anfield and he has registered just one goal contribution in seven matches so far this season, with Liverpool legend Jamie Carragher continuously criticising him for his underwhelming form.

Wirtz still has over three-and-a-half years remaining on his current contract with the Merseyside giants, but the club have been tipped to pursue a possible sale next summer amid his subpar performances.

Bayern Munich are reportedly keeping close tabs on Wirtz’s situation at Anfield, however Matthaus believes there is no room for the Germany attacker in Vincent Kompany’s side. Instead, he has tipped Chelsea to pursue a shock deal.

“When I look at Bayern Munich’s attacking options, [Harry] Kane, [Michael] Olise and [Luis] Diaz are established starters, while [Jamal] Musiala and [Serge] Gnabry are also top-quality players. The club wants to extend Kane’s and Olise’s contracts, while the others are tied down to long-term deals. [Ismael] Saibari has also recently joined the squad,” Matthaus wrote for Sky Germany (via BuliNews).

“At the moment, I honestly wouldn’t know where Wirtz would fit in, and I simply don’t see any realistic short-term possibility of bringing him to Bayern Munich.

“If Wirtz continues to face criticism at Liverpool and fails to show the joy and freedom in his game that we know he has, then at some point all parties will have to sit down together and perhaps find a solution.

“There are clubs in Spain that would be interested, as well as another club in England: Chelsea, where Wirtz’s former coach Xabi Alonso is now in charge.”

Chelsea unlikely to sign Florian Wirtz

While Matthaus believes that Chelsea would be interested in finalising a deal for Wirtz in 2027, it remains highly unlikely that a move to Stamford Bridge will take place.

Firstly, the Blues spent €138m on Morgan Rogers over the summer and the England star, who plays in Wirtz’s ideal position, has hit the ground running since his arrival at the club, notching four goals and four assists in just eight games.

The west London giants are also expected to prioritise a deeper central midfield next year, amid strong interest in Alex Scott, while Wirtz’s disappointing form in England will likely dissuade them from pursuing a deal.
