Wonderkid centre-back targeted

The feel-good factor at Man Utd evaporated immediately at the very beginning of the new season this past weekend as they fell to a 2-0 defeat against newly promoted Hull City.

For both goals, the defending was woeful and that has apparently prompted the club into action to look for a new centre-back.

The Red Devils are keeping a close eye on VfB Stuttgart wonderkid Finn Jeltsch as the club continues planning for the long-term future of its backline, with Harry Maguire likely to be ousted sooner rather than later.

As with all young German talent, however, United will need to fight Bayern Munich for his €50 million signature, reports Caught Offside.

Baleba's first words

Carlos Baleba has spoken for the first time since being unveiled as a Man Utd player.

"It is an incredible feeling to join the club of my dreams. Playing at Old Trafford is always special but the opportunity to do so as a Manchester United player will be a real honour," he said.

"I cannot wait to work with Michael Carrick; his experience and knowledge of the game make him the perfect coach to help me to reach the highest level.

"The ambition of everyone at the club is extremely clear, the future is hugely exciting, and I am determined to play my part in delivering the success that we are capable of together."

United has been tracking the Brighton midfielder for some time and on Thursday confirmed his €81m acquisition from the Seagulls.

The club has now signed three midfielders this summer - Baleba, Youri Tielemans and Andrey Santos.

Kadıoglu and Balde left-back options

Ferdi Kadioglu is a potential left-back option for the club. The Brighton defender is valued for his versatility and experience, but he appears to be more of an alternative target rather than United’s main priority.

Alejandro Balde looks like the more attractive option, however. United have reportedly contacted his representatives and are exploring a deal, although Barcelona would prefer a permanent transfer while United would favour a loan.

Balde’s pace, attacking ability and age make him a strong fit for United, but the deal could depend on Barcelona lowering their demands.

He is more likely to leave Barca this summer than to stay, as per AS.

The dream left-back signing for United remains Lewis Hall but Newcastle won't sanction a deal after so many other key players left this summer.

Loan move for Obi?

Chido Obi is in talks to leave Manchester United on loan to Feyenoord, reports De Telegraaf.

The 18-year-old striker is viewed by United as a player who needs regular senior football, after making eight first-team appearances during the 2024/25 season but spending much of last campaign with the academy.

Feyenoord are currently interested in a straight loan, with no confirmed purchase option at this stage. The move would give Obi experience in the Eredivisie and potentially Champions League football, while United could monitor his development before deciding his longer-term future.

The deal isn't done yet, but talks are ongoing and United are open to letting him go. Feyenoord already have several strikers, so a potential departure for Ayase Ueda could be one reason they are pursuing Obi.

Too many midfielders?

Former Man Utd favourite Dwight Yorke has questioned the club's deal for Baleba as he believes there is enough midfielders already at Old Trafford.

"Carlos Baleba to Man Utd? It's been a very weird transfer window," he told Reviant.

"Man Utd seem to be concentrating a lot on the central area of the park, where we already have plenty of players. Don't forget [Manuel] Ugarte, who is injured.

"We know Casemiro did a pretty good job toward the end of last season, thanks to his experience, but I’m not sure why we are concentrating on that position so much. The defensive areas of the pitch are the ones that stand out, and we haven't been able to address those.

"So, we've added another young player who is still unproven in Carlos Baleba. He showed good signs in the past, but from my understanding, we aren't signing him based on his recent form, but his form of a couple of seasons ago. I'm a bit confused by it myself, but I do believe we are focusing way too much on that central area rather than other aspects of the team."

United now have Baleba, Bruno Fernandes, Ugarte, Kobbie Mainoo, Tielemans and Santos who can play central midfield.
