Surprise Tielemans move

After their pursuit of Atalanta midfielder Ederson allegedly fell through, United quickly moved on to alternatives and, according to David Ornstein, they have agreed a deal to sign Aston Villa's Youri Tielemans.

The club have decided to trigger a release clause in his Villa contract that will see him move to Old Trafford for €41m (£35m).

The Belgian, who represented his nation at the 2026 World Cup this summer, made 35 appearances across all competitions for Aston Villa last season, scoring two goals and providing seven assists. He is set to become the third player to depart the club on a permanent deal this summer after Donyell Malen and Enzo Barrenechea, but Villa are on the cusp of signing Freiburg midfielder Johan Manzambi from under the noses of Newcastle.

Competition for Gomes

Man Utd have been linked with Wolves midfielder Joao Gomes for a while now and that transfer appears to be a possibility again after his proposed switch to Atletico Madrid was called off.

United are back in the hun for him for around €45m, but Liverpool are not apparently interested in injecting themselves into a transfer battle for the Brazilian.

O Globo reports that both clubs have made contact with Wolves already about a deal, so it may be up to the player.

Ederson deal not dead?

Despite numerous reports to the contrary, Man Utd's move for Ederson may not be totally dead in the water.

The club wanted to delay the acquisition of the Atalanta midfielder until after the World Cup but even after Brazil were eliminated, there was no progress on a confirmed deal and that's because the club became concerned about a knee issue the player has and whether it could develop into a long-term problem.

The club have not completely ruled out revisiting a transfer for Ederson. David Ornstein, Ben Jacobs and Sky Sports have all confirmed that the move could be revived later in this transfer window.

Carrick and Rooney sign new deals...

The sons of Carrick and Wayne Rooney have both signed new scholarship deals with Man Utd.

Kai Rooney made his debut at Old Trafford last season in an FA Youth Cup game against Derby. Reacting to the deal, he said:

"It symbolises the start of something hopefully great, and something with lots of memories to come with lots of hard work."

Jacey Carrick, meanwhile, said: "This day is very special because I remember the first time when I signed for Man United and it just brings back flashbacks."

Rashford to hold Man Utd talks

Fabrizio Romano has confirmed on his YouTube channel that Marcus Rashford will hold talks with Carrick about his future at the club when he returns from the World Cup.

It seems a foregone conclusion that Barcelona would trigger their option to sign the England international on a permanent basis following his successful loan spell last season, but they instead signed Anthony Gordon from Newcastle for €80 million, while Karim Adeyemi is set to join from Dortmund.

Due to his high wages, Rashford doesn't have a great deal of options and his future will be discussed upon a return to Old Trafford in a few weeks.

Scholes' Santos concerns

Paul Scholes is concerned that Santos, who joined today from Chelsea, doesn't necessarily move the needle for the club in terms of a marquee signing.

"I don’t think there’s going to be a lot of excitement about it, is there? Put it that way," he said on The Good, the Bad and the football pod

"Why are Chelsea selling him, a 22-year-old kid? Who else is around now, though, who they can get? [Sandro] Tonali has gone [to Tottenham].

"Ultimately, with Manchester United especially, it will be the fellas at the top of the club who would be deciding [targets]. And I think they might see some value in this player as a sellable [asset].

"But Manchester United buying players as a sell-on value? We need players for now."We’ve got the Champions League next year, we’ve got three games a week. It’s going to be awful without these players."
