Man Utd signing U-turn confirmed: €45m deal on
Several sources have confirmed that Manchester United could revisit their failed deal for Atalanta midfielder Ederson later this summer.
The Brazil international looked set to become the Red Devils' first signing of the summer after a €45 million financial package was agreed with Atalanta last month. Ederson had initially looked set for a move to Atletico Madrid, but the deal collapsed, allowing Man Utd to pounce.
The Old Trafford club had been following the 27-year-old since at least 2024, so this was the ideal opportunity for them to finally get their hands on a long-term target. However, Man Utd insisted on delaying the deal until after the World Cup.
The reason for this became clear last week: Ederson has had a knee issue and the Red Devils wanted to get a specialist's opinion on whether there could potentially be long-term damage.
After carrying out thorough medical examinations, the Premier League giants decided to pull the plug on the deal. Chelsea midfielder Andrey Santos has instead become Michael Carrick's first signing, while Aston Villa midfielder Youri Tielemans is believed to be up next.
Man Utd could revive Ederson deal
And yet, despite the deal for Ederson having collapsed, Man Utd have not completely ruled out revisiting a transfer for the Brazilian further down the line. David Ornstein, Ben Jacobs and Sky Sports have all confirmed that the move could be revived later this summer.
Man Utd feel that they still need an Ederson-style player for their team. Neither Santos nor Tielemans is believed to be viewed as an alternative to the 27-year-old, so another midfield signing will almost certainly be made.
And that signing could yet turn out to be Ederson. The knee issue that was flagged during his medical is not thought to be negatively affecting him right now, with Atalanta insisting that the player is fully fit.
Man Utd simply felt that it would be a risk to spend €45m on a player who might develop a long-term injury problem. If they can manage to renegotiate his price tag, they could still proceed with the signing of Ederson.
The good thing for Man Utd in that respect is that Atalanta are not operating from a position of strength. Ederson is out of contract next year and keen to take the next step in his career, all but ruling out an extension.
Faced with the prospect of losing their star midfielder for nothing in 2027, Atalanta may be malleable on his price. No decision has been made at this stage, but while the deal is off for now, there is no guarantee that it stays that way. Ederson could yet end up at Old Trafford after all.
