Liverpool manager Andoni Iraola has told the club that his squad needs new signings after speaking to the media for the first time since taking the hotseat at Anfield.

Iraola took the role as Liverpool boss early in the summer after Arne Slot was sacked following a disappointing campaign that saw the Reds finish a disappointing fifth in the Premier League table.

Liverpool spent lavishly to fund Slot’s second campaign in charge of the club, and now Iraola is demanding fresh investment in the playing squad as he prepares to mount a fresh assault on the Premier League table.

The club has already splashed out €40 million to sign Spain international winger Victor Munoz from Osasuna, while a deal has been concluded for Jeremy Jacquet that has seen the young French centre-back arrive at Anfield.

Despite an early summer outlay of more than €100m, Iraola has asked for more new signings.

“Obviously, we have signed two players already but we need more players. We know this. The club is working on this,” he told the media.

“Me, as a coach, selfishly, we want the players here from day one to train from pre-season.

“But we know football doesn’t work like this. The club is working hard to get those signings.”

Who do Liverpool want to sign this summer?

Liverpool are expected to add throughout their squad this summer.

Replacing Mohamed Salah is the big challenge that Iraola faces. RB Leipzig winger Yan Diomande has been targeted while PSG’s Bradley Barcola is reportedly another option.

In addition to this, Hugo Ekitike’s long-term absence has blown a hole in attack. Beyond Alexander Isak, Liverpool do not have another player who is a natural in the No.9 role.

The central defensive area is one that has been in need of surgery since last season. Jacquet may have arrived, but the departure of Ibrahima Konate and the prospect of Giovanni Leoni taking time to recover from a long-term knee injury means that veteran Virgil van Dijk, himself into what could be his last year at the club, needs another partner.

More energy is expected to be added to the heart of the midfield. A lack of consistency in their central players was an issue and it is expected to be addressed with a new signing. Lille’s Ayyoub Bouaddi is one player who has been regularly linked with a move to the club.
