Chelsea Transfer News Today: Diogo Costa deal accelerates as €50m decision made
All the latest Chelsea transfer news in one place, including updates on Diogo Costa, Alejandro Garnacho and Julian Quinones.
Chelsea ramp up Costa interest
Chelsea are stepping up their pursuit of Porto goalkeeper Diogo Costa, TSF claims.
The Blues have been keeping tabs on the Portugal international for "some time" and are prepared to make a move for him this summer after his exploits at the World Cup. Costa also has suitors elsewhere.
However, Porto do not want to lose their No.1, which means that Chelsea may be forced to trigger his €60 million release clause in order to get a deal over the line. He is at the top of the Blues' shortlist, but no offer has so far been made.
Garnacho decision
Fabrizio Romano has confirmed that Alejandro Garnacho has been transfer-listed for €50m by Chelsea.
The Argentina international is officially for sale despite only joining last year. AS Roma and other clubs are showing an interest in the 21-year-old, but Chelsea's stance is clear: they will only consider permanent offers.
As a result, a move to Roma currently appears to be unlikely, despite Garnacho being open to the move. Meanwhile, the Serie A side are in talks over a €30m deal for Diego Moreira from Chelsea's sister club Strasbourg.
No Quinones interest
Chelsea have not made a bid for Al-Qadsiah striker Julian Quinones, Ben Jacobs understands.
Reports in Saudi Arabia had claimed that the Blues made an offer for the Mexico international after his impressive World Cup. The 29-year-old bagged four goals in five games for El Tri.
Quinones won the Saudi Pro League Golden Boot ahead of Cristiano Ronaldo last season, but despite his impressive numbers, he does not appear to be an option for Chelsea.
Benitez backs Alonso
Former Chelsea manager Rafa Benitez has backed Xabi Alonso to succeed at Stamford Bridge ahead of his first season in charge of the Blues.
"I think Xabi is really clever. He did really well with Leverkusen - and that was a surprise, because he was coming from Real Sociedad B," Benitez told Sky Sports. "To do what he did at Leverkusen was fantastic.
"Then going to Real Madrid - we know from experience that this is quite complicated - but at the same time he knows the league, he knows the players. He knows everything around the Premier League. He’s clever - I think he is a good coach. Chelsea is not easy, but I think he can do well."
