Marcus Rashford could stay at Manchester United next season, according to a bombshell report from football transfer news expert Fabrizio Romano.

The England international will not be joining Barcelona on a permanent deal this summer, after Hansi Flick’s side rejected the chance to trigger their €30 million buy clause, and he is set to return to Old Trafford ahead of pre-season.

It was initially thought that Man Utd would look to sell Rashford on a permanent deal before the start of the 2026-27 campaign, with the club eager to cut ties, but Romano has now revealed that an exit is not a foregone conclusion.

In fact, Rashford could reportedly be re-integrated into the Man Utd first-team squad next term.

In his latest YouTube video, Romano admitted: “There has been direct contact between Rashford's representatives and Man Utd, with both sides open to restarting the process of reintegrating him into the first-team squad.

“This is a significant update because Man Utd have informed Rashford that they would be happy to welcome him back for pre-season training as part of Michael Carrick's squad. The managerial situation has changed since Rashford left and the club's plan is to reintegrate him during pre-season and then assess what happens later in the transfer window.

“From what I understand, Rashford has not closed the door on this possibility. He is open to returning to Man Utd, resuming training, and seeing how the situation develops.

“Of course, things could still change if another club comes forward with an offer. That could present an opportunity for both the player and Man Utd. However, Rashford remains under contract until 2028, and the club are currently prepared to welcome him back into their pre-season plans.

“This does not mean Rashford is guaranteed to stay at Man Utd, but the fact that both sides are willing to work together again is already a major development in the story.”

Analysis: Why Man Utd should keep Marcus Rashford

Having moved away from Ruben Amorim’s favoured 3-4-3 system since the appointment of Carrick, Man Utd now have a slight shortage of left wingers and, as such, they have been tipped to pursue a new signing this summer.

Patrick Dorgu and Matheus Cunha are currently in competition for the role, but neither are natural options in that position, which is a key reason why Man Utd have been linked with a new left winger in recent weeks.

However, simply re-integrating Rashford would solve the issue.

He fell out of favour under Amorim, but he has rebuilt his career at Aston Villa and Barcelona, and if Carrick can get the Englishman on side, there is little to suggest that Rashford wouldn’t be able to contribute positively next season.

He isn’t the perfect winger, of course, however Rashford is still an excellent player on his day and it would be wise for Man Utd to save their funds for the signing of Mateus Fernandes instead of pursuing a new left-sided forward too.
