Man City target €260m double deal for Sandro Tonali and Elliot Anderson
Manchester City want to sign both Sandro Tonali from Newcastle and Nottingham Forest midfielder Elliot Anderson this summer.
The Cityzens have yet to formally announce the appointment of Enzo Maresca as the successor to Pep Guardiola, as they still seek a breakthrough in discussions with Chelsea over compensation for the Italian.
However, Maresca is already coordinating the club's summer business with sporting director Hugo Viana - and the pair are planning to go big. With Bernardo Silva having departed for Real Madrid and there being uncertainty over the future of Rodri, Man City are ready to break the bank to revamp their midfield.
City have been trying to agree a deal for Forest star Anderson for several weeks now. They have had two bids rejected by the Tricky Trees, with the second clocking in at a whopping €139 million. However, Forest held firm. They want a new Premier League-record fee of more than €145m.
The Etihad club are expected to return with a fresh offer in the knowledge that Anderson is keen on the move. The 23-year-old has informed both City and Forest that he wants to play in Manchester next season.
It's not Anderson or Tonali for City
It was previously thought that City would pivot to Newcastle midfielder Tonali if they failed to agree a deal with Forest for Anderson. However, The Athletic now reports that they actually want both this summer.
Despite Tonali also likely commanding a fee north of €115m, City want to ideally sign both. They are not deterred by the exorbitant cost of this double deal as they want to assemble a midfield capable of dominating the Premier League.
At present, City seemingly have not yet turned their interest in Tonali into a negotiation over a deal, but they are giving "genuine consideration" to pursuing him alongside Anderson.
This comes after reports that Tottenham are making a strong push for the Italy international. Spurs want to make Tonali their marquee signing of the summer and are prepared to pay a significant fee for him.
Tonali is understood to be open to joining Tottenham, but this Man City revelation could yet throw a spanner in the works as far as Spurs are concerned. After all, they can't offer him Champions League football - or any European football for that matter.
It will be fascinating to see how this story develops in the coming days.
