Folarin Balogun’s Monaco future takes fresh twist with official transfer announcement

Folarin Balogun’s future at Monaco remains uncertain following an announcement by the sporting director of the Ligue 1 club indicating that the USMNT star could be sold in January.

Balogun was central to a dramatic transfer Deadline Day saga that saw an on-off move to Premier League side Everton collapse at the last moment.

The striker held a medical with the Liverpool club that they were not entirely happy with, prompting them to pursue Manchester United’s Joshua Zirkzee. When it became that deal was not progressing, they tried to revisit a move for the American but ran out of time.

Meanwhile, Monaco have been under financial pressure to make other sales, but these also did not go through.

Aleksandr Golovin and Lamine Camara were other stars who failed to find a new club in the summer, forcing the Ligue 1 outfit to take action in January.

“Obviously, we're going to see players leave this winter. It's important,” sporting director Thiago Scuro told RMC.

And Bologun is a leading candidate to depart when the time comes.

“Obviously, we have a lot of players in attack,” Scuro admitted.

“We had an agreement with Balogun. What happened with him changes our plans for this winter a bit. But that was the original plan: to find a solution for Balogun. After that, we don't have control over all the decisions to come this winter.”

Balogun set for cut-priced Monaco exit: Could Everton benefit?

Balogun has yet to feature for Monaco this season after playing through a knee injury during the USA’s World Cup run. It is believed that this was the issue that prompted his switch to Everton to collapse, leaving him stranded in France and David Moyes’ side lacking centre-forward alternatives to Thierno Barry.

The delay in the move, though, could prove beneficial for Everton in the long run – at least financially.

With Monaco under pressure to raise funds, the Toffees can squeeze the price down on the USA international and potentially sign him for a move attractive figure.

While there is also the prospect of Lamine Camara attracting interest from the Premier League once again – Chelsea were most notably targeting him – it’s clear that Monaco have a preference to shed some weight from a bloated attacking sector.

Camara, who is a midfielder, is therefore likely to be retained and the price is unlikely to be as flexible with him.

Scuro, meanwhile, finds his own position at Monaco under question following the botched summer transfer window, in which sales for Balogun and Camara collapsed, leaving the club in a state of urgency to raise funds in January. The pressure is on him not to get it wrong again.
