Liverpool devastated as record-shattering deal confirmed: Iraola told it's over
AC Milan have officially confirmed the record-shattering signing of PSG forward Goncalo Ramos in a deal that will have major ramifications for Liverpool's summer business.
After wasting millions on underperforming strikers in recent years, the Rossoneri believe that they have finally found their new superstar No.9, and new head coach Ruben Amorim is tasked with unlocking him.
Milan's deal to sign Ramos came out of nowhere and materialised fairly quickly. Despite currently being at the World Cup, the 25-year-old greenlit the move as he was keen to leave PSG.
A two-time Champions League winner with the French side, Ramos never really found a home in Paris as Luis Enrique has favoured playing without a traditional striker.
The fact that Ramos wasn't a guaranteed starter makes this one of the most remarkable and fascinating deals of the summer. Milan have paid €74 million for a backup striker, completely obliterating their previous club record of €49.5m, held by Rafael Leao.
Diomande deal funded?
The sale of Ramos means that PSG now have the squad space and funds available to go big for RB Leipzig winger Yan Diomande. Reports have surfaced in recent days that the Ivorian has decided that he wants to move to Paris this summer.
PSG president Nasser Al-Khelaifi is now in direct conversation with Red Bull CEO Oliver Mintzlaff over a deal. The two have a very good relationship, but Leipzig insist that Diomande is not for sale this summer.
This was reiterated quite strongly by sporting director Marcel Schafer on Monday. However, it is believed that a fee in excess of €120m would seriously test the Bundesliga side's resolve.
Liverpool have to watch all of this from afar. They were desperate to sign Diomande this summer, and they have been hit hard by his decision to give the green light to a PSG transfer.
The Reds had a €100m bid turned down by Leipzig, with Sky Germany confirming that they will not return with a new offer following the 19-year-old's agreement with PSG. New head coach Andoni Iraola has been told that the pursuit of Diomande is effectively over.
To make matters worse for the Anfield club, The Athletic reports that PSG have made it clear that Bradley Barcola, Liverpool's preferred Diomande alternative, is not for sale, despite his refusal to sign a new contract.
The journalist claims that PSG value Barcola in the same ballpark as Elliot Anderson, who is on the verge of joining Man City for a cool €134m, making him the most expensive British player ever.
Ramos' move to Milan is the first domino in the Diomande saga - and it's bad news for Liverpool.
