Carrick's chances of Man Utd permanent manager job take huge hit after fresh twist
Michael Carrick chances of being named Manchester United’s permanent manager could be under threat after a recent twist in the situation.
Carrick is considered the favourite to be handed the reins on a full-time basis at Old Trafford after an impressive turnaround since being named interim boss in January, with United sitting third in the league and on course to qualify for next season’s Champions League.
However, despite winning six of his first seven matches in charge, United have picked up just four points in their last four matches, including a poor 2-1 loss at home to relegation-threatened Leeds United on Monday.
United have yet to make a formal decision over Carrick’s future or who their next manager will be and nothing will be decided until the end of the season when the club know whether they will be playing Champions League football next season.
Carrick is understood to have impressed United’s hierarchy, while his players have come out in support of him, although much will depend on the team’s results to end the season.
United have reportedly sounded out a move for Julian Naglesmann but a new managerial contender has also emerged this week which could throw Carrick’s future into doubt.
Andoni Iraola to leave Bournemouth at the end of the season
Bournemouth confirmed on Tuesday that Andoni Iraola will leave the club at the end of the season when his contract expires after three years with the Cherries.
Iraola has earned praise for his time on the south coast, having overseen a number of players being sold while still maintaining strong results and an attractive style of football.
The Spanish coach has been pursued by the likes of Crystal Palace, although a return to Athletic Club – where Iraola spent virtually his entire playing career – is deemed as unlikely despite interest.
United had considered Iraola as a target but they had been unconvinced that any other coaches in the Premier League represented a significant step up from Carrick.
However, should United’s form continue to slide under Carrick, Iraola or an alternative may be considered ahead of an expected managerial merry-go-round across Europe this summer.
