Man Utd Transfer News Today: Talks held with Xabi Alonso over manager job as summer plans take shape
All the latest Man Utd transfer news in one place, including updates on Xabi Alonso, Sandro Tonali and Matthijs de Ligt.
Exclusive: Man Utd hold talks with Xabi Alonso
The Spaniard left Real Madrid by mutual consent in January, despite overseeing 24 wins in 34 games in charge of Los Blancos, and he has been heavily linked with a number of teams ahead of the 2026-27 season.
While Liverpool are believed to be the strongest contenders for Alonso, sources told FootballTransfers that the in-demand coach has already spoken to Manchester City, Manchester United, Benfica, Sporting CP and Porto ahead of this summer.
The 44-year-old is yet to make a decision on his preferred club for next season, but negotiations have been initiated as he eyes a swift return to management.
Tonali and Wharton unlikely to join Man Utd
The Red Devils have been linked with a string of high-profile midfielders, with the likes of Carlos Baleba and Elliot Anderson among those still in the running to join the Old Trafford side.
However, United are notably ready to overlook both Sandro Tonali and Adam Wharton, according to an update delivered by transfer insider Ben Jacobs.
Wharton is likely to be ruled out because he is too similar to Kobbie Mainoo, according to Jacobs, while the Red Devils believe Tonali would not prove value for money because of his high fee and wages.
More details on Man Utd midfield push
Ben Jacobs also expanded on other names on Manchester United’s shortlist, such as Carlos Baleba, Angelo Stiller and Bruno Guimaraes.
Although United’s top target is still Elliot Anderson, the club are ‘definitely discussing’ West Ham’s Matheus Fernandes and much will depend on the first midfielder signed before determining a second option that the Red Devils wish to bring in.
At 28, Guimaraes’ age is said to count against him, Jacobs told The United Stand, with Newcastle also still demanding a significant price tag, while the club would prefer a player with Premier League experience over Stiller.
Instead, Baleba could become a more ‘marketable opportunity’, although it is ‘50/50’ if United follow up on their interest, with Brighton still holding out for a huge fee.
De Ligt considering Man Utd future
The Netherlands international has been ruled out of action since late November due to a back injury and he has only made 14 appearances across all competitions this term as a result.
De Ligt is considering his future at Old Trafford according to Spanish publication Fichajes, who claim that Atletico Madrid have emerged as strong contenders to sign him in the summer.
It’s reported that De Ligt is viewed as the perfect player for Simeone’s system, and his representatives are understood to be exploring his options as they prepare for a possible transfer this summer, with a fee of €40m suggested as enough for Atletico to secure his signature this summer.
Maguire calls on Man Utd progress with transfers
Speaking to reporters while on a training camp in Dublin, Maguire admitted: “I always want to be part of a squad that I felt like could compete and the recruitment went well last year, we brought in some top players who helped us.
“I think this summer's going to be a big summer, I think we've got to recruit really well. Obviously there's a big manager decision as well, but I think the recruitment side of it is bringing players in.
“I think this summer has got to be a big year because we're not in Europe this year, we've played 40 games at the end of the season, and we definitely need a bigger squad next year.”
